Year-end tax deduction facts
Your donation date is the pickup date
For vehicle donations, the IRS looks at when you actually give up control of the car. When the tow truck picks up your vehicle and title on or before December 31, that pickup day becomes your donation date for this tax year.
Form 1098-C documents larger deductions
If your vehicle sells for more than the IRS reporting threshold, Heritage for the Blind issues Form 1098‑C. This form shows the gross sale price and is what you’ll use to support your deduction on your federal income tax return.
Deduction generally equals sale price
In most cases, the amount you can deduct for a donated vehicle is the gross sale price the charity receives. That final sale amount appears on your Form 1098‑C or written acknowledgment, so you and your tax preparer can claim the correct deduction.
You’ll need to itemize on Schedule A
To claim a car‑donation deduction, you must itemize your deductions on Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Keep your 1098‑C or acknowledgment with your tax records to support the charitable contribution line on your return.
30-day acknowledgment rule
Heritage for the Blind mails your Form 1098‑C or written acknowledgment within 30 days after your vehicle is sold. Even if the car sells in the new year, your deduction still applies to the tax year in which the vehicle was picked up.
